With over 6o miles of sandy coastline, it’s easy to see why beachcombing is a popular Grand Strand pastime for both locals and visitors alike. Each wave brings a bounty of treasure fresh from the ocean and straight to your feet, and all you have to do is look down! Collectors can find a variety of seashells scattered across the sand, as well as sea glass, stones, driftwood, and shark teeth. If you’re lucky, you might even find a prehistoric megalodon tooth — at least 4 have been found in North Myrtle Beach in the past few years!
We can’t think of a more peaceful activity than scooping up seashells while strolling on the beach. Can you? Here are some beachcombing tips for beginners vacationing on the Grand Strand.
- The best times to comb the beach are low tide (when there is more sand exposed), after a storm, or during a full moon (when tides are extreme).
- Grab a friend or two and get an early start before the beach gets crowded.
- Bring a sand pail to hold your treasures, a shovel for digging, and a sieve for straining.
- Be patient. Treasures can wash up anywhere, and some beachcombing days are better than others.
- Be respectful of wildlife. Stay off the dunes, and never take home a living creature.
- Pay attention to the high tide line and areas around piers where shells are often plentiful.
- Remember to clean the shells and other treasures you plan to keep as souvenirs of your beach vacation.
- Have fun — and don’t forget wear sunscreen!
