While the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk we know and love today officially opened in 2010, this oceanfront destination has a rich history dating back to the 1930’s.

Once a bustling promenade, Hurricane Hazel destroyed the original boardwalk in 1954. The 6.5 million dollar redesign took nearly nine months to build. Recently voted one of National Geographic’s top 10 U.S. boardwalks, it runs 1.2 miles along the oceanfront, from the 2nd Avenue Pier to the 14th Avenue Pier, and is dotted with shops, eateries, and attractions.

Although some things have changed, others remain the same. Here are five must-see landmarks on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk for both locals and visitors to enjoy!

The Gay Dolphin Gift Cove

A Myrtle Beach institution, this unique store has anchored the boardwalk since 1946, and is called the nation’s largest gift shop for a good reason. Standing at a whopping twenty six thousand square feet, the Gay Dolphin has seven levels of souvenirs, novelty items, and kitschy collectibles, and is a must-see!

Peaches Corner

Since 1937, Peaches Corner has been serving up traditional boardwalk fare, including foot-long hot dogs, juicy burgers, cheese fries, and hand-scooped ice cream favorites. Located at 9th Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, a Grand Strand vacation isn’t complete without a stop at this nostalgic eatery, and a stroll on the beach.

2nd Ave Pier House Restaurant

A day on the pier and playing in the surf can really work up an appetite! The 2nd Avenue Pier House Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a million-dollar view of the Atlantic Ocean. Options include savory sandwiches and salads, fresh seafood, and delicious steaks. Open daily; this establishment is located on the 2nd Avenue Pier, a Myrtle Beach fixture since 1936.

The Bowery

This world-famous oceanfront bar and restaurant has been a part of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk since 1944, and is one of the coolest places to go for live music. Called the “8th Wonder of the World,” The Bowery is considered the home of country super group Alabama, and has a unique place in music history.

The SkyWheel

The newest kid on the block, this 187-foot tall Ferris wheel opened in 2011, and features 42 glass-enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas. Each sits two to six people, and is fun for all ages. With breath-taking views of the ocean, this Myrtle Beach landmark is truly must-see and is hard to miss!

Have you heard the good news? No, it’s not the recent discovery that the best cure for a cough may actually be chocolate — although that’s pretty amazing too. However, it does have to do with your health. We’re talking about the other big news that’s been trending this week: taking a trip with your girlfriends is good for your health, according to science. And with Galentine’s Day this month, there’s no better time to hit the beach with your BFFs. Here are just a few reasons to plan a Grand Strand Girl’s Weekend today, according to our favorite magazine, Southern Living.

Friendship might just be the key to a longer life. Studies have shown close friendships can extend life expectancy by lowering our risk of heart disease and stress, and even helping us to better tolerate pain.

Friendships make us happier people. Hanging out with friends can increase the body’s production of oxytocin, the feel-good hormone that boosts happiness, trust, and generosity, according to recent research.

Friendships are like the Fountain of Youth. A recent study at Harvard on the health benefits of strong relationships has shown a lack of friendship can lead to cognitive decline as we age, and even premature death, due to an increased risk of depression and dementia.

If you’ve been putting off that much-needed getaway, it’s time to pack your bags and give Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach a call! And in case you need an excuse to take a minibreak, you can tell your boss and your family that it’s good for your health. Check out this featured property for your stay.

You probably already know that the Grand Strand is one the most popular vacation destinations on the East Coast, thanks to 60 miles of beautiful beaches, world-class golf, and some of the best shopping, dining, and attractions around. But you may be surprised to learn that this area is also rich in American history, dating all the way back to the days when South Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies. And there is no better place to learn about the history of your favorite vacation destination than by visiting the Horry County Museum.

Horry County is located in the northeast corner of South Carolina. It is the largest county in state, and includes North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach, as well as surrounding areas. The county seat is located in the heart of downtown Conway — along with the Horry County Museum, which is housed in the historic Burroughs School building. Built in 1905, the building still has its original hardwood flooring, and serves an artifact itself! Admission to the museum is free to the public, but donations are accepted. Guided gallery tours are available every Wednesday at 2PM, excluding holidays.

Here are just a few of the exhibits:

The ‘Tanked’ Aquarium

When you first enter the building, you will find the ‘Tanked’ Aquarium. Beautifully designed and located in the center of the spiral staircase, it was featured on the Animal Planet show, Tanked. This living natural history exhibit holds 4400 gallons of water, and a variety of freshwater fish that are native to local rivers and lakes. Be sure to stay for a feeding, but don’t stand too close or you may get splashed!

Natural History

In addition to the aquarium, visitors will learn about the animals found along the Grand Strand, including the American Black Bear, American Alligator, and various birds of prey.

Military

Horry County was named for Revolutionary War Captain Peter Horry. There are multiple military exhibits to explore, including artifacts from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.

Native Americans

The first residents of Horry County were here centuries before Europeans set foot in South Carolina. Learn more about their customs, tools, and daily life, including a Native American house constructed from local materials using the waddle and daub method.

Horry County Beaches

The Grand Strand beaches are in important part of the region’s history. From the Pavilion and other early attractions, to historic bathing suits and the start of the Shag, the Beach Gallery is sure to delight locals and vacationers alike.

Textiles

The Textiles exhibit changes throughout the year, and showcases garments, early sewing machines and washing machines, and a loom. The museum also holds an annual Quilt Gala each February, and places ribbon winning quilts on display.

There is much more to see, including a Photography Gallery, and much more to experience! In addition to the Horry County Museum, there is also the L.W. Paul Living History Farm that replicates what life was like on a “one horse family farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955. Visitors will have the opportunity to sample everyday farm life from this era, through demonstrations and free guided tours.

Contact Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach today, and start planning a historic vacation the whole family will remember. But first, check out this featured property.

If the weather outside is frightful, the Grand Strand is delightful! Becoming a Snowbird after your retirement is a big decision, but if a warmer climate, world-class golf and attractions, and miles of beautiful beaches sound like Heaven to you, it may just be the best decision of your life. Here are the seven benefits of being a Snowbird on the Grand Strand.

  • Myrtle Beach was recently named one of “America’s 100 Best Places to Retire,” by Where To Retire magazine, the authority on retirement relocation.
  • According to Healthline, spending more time in the sun improves your mood by boosting serotonin levels, and as the major source of vitamin D, the sun’s rays also help you build stronger bones.
  • Being by the ocean is good for your health, too! According to Everyday Health, the saltwater in the ocean has anti-aging properties and can help to preserve the elasticity of your skin.
  • Reducing your stress level is also key to staying young and healthy, and there’s nothing more relaxing than a day at the beach — whether you’re reading a book, taking a walk on the sand, collecting seashells, or simply breathing in the salty air.
  • Myrtle Beach is known as the Golf Capital of the World, with over 100 amazing courses created by the likes of Arnold Palmer, Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus, and Greg Norman. Gregg Norman also has a wonderful waterfront restaurant at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach.
  • Speaking of restaurants, the Grand Strand is famous for fresh seafood. You’ll find a huge variety of delicious options ranging from the finest dining establishments to tasty boardwalk fare.
  • Your retirement is a time to have fun and experience everything life has to offer. There is so much to do and see on the Grand Strand, including spectacular shows at the Carolina Opry and Alabama Theatre, live music at the House of Blues, culture at the Franklin G.
