Did you know sharks have several rows of teeth in each jaw, and that their teeth tend to fall out pretty easily? It’s true! Sharks are constantly losing and regenerating teeth by the thousands, and those little (and sometimes big) treasures will end up washing ashore on the beach at some point.

If you happen to find a tooth with a white crown and root, chances are it’s not that old. But if you happen to find a tooth that is darkly colored, you have found an actual fossil! Most of the shark teeth found on the Carolina coast are fossilized, and some belong to extinct species that date back millions of years. In fact, several giant Megalodon shark teeth have been found along the Grand Strand in the past several years — as well as a Mastodon tooth this past summer! That’s quite a vacation souvenir.

Here are some fun tips for finding shark teeth on the Grand Strand:

  • Not sure when to begin your search? The best time to find shark teeth is when the tide is rolling in. Low tide is another good time to search.

  • Not sure where to look? Stick to the shell beds along the coastline, where the water pushes ashore and then recedes, leaving behind a bounty of treasure.

  • Not having much luck on the sand? Each wave has the potential of bringing in new teeth, so try your luck spotting some in shallow water.

  • Not sure what to look for? When combing the beach for shark teeth, look for pieces that are triangular, very shiny, and black.

  • Not sure if what you found is a shark tooth? Wet shell bits are shiny and can fit the above description. Shark teeth will also have a gum line at the base and ridges along the edge that come to a sharp point.

You’ll have to sift through lots of shell bits to find what you seek, so be patient and look carefully! You can purchase tools online to help with your search, or construct a simple fossil sifter to bring on your trip. Click here for instructions from Popular Science.

Some foods are just quintessentially southern. If you’ve never tried a pimento cheese and fried green tomato BLT, collard greens, or sweet tea — to name a few — you are surely missing out! Here are just a few signature southern foods and where to find them on your next Grand Strand vacation!

  1. Boiled Peanuts

Historically, this southern delicacy was often found at late summer social gatherings, when the final peanut crops were boiled for hours in heavily salted water for preservation. With a soft texture similar to beans and easy to peel shells, you can now find boiled peanuts sold by the bag at roadside rest stops along your trip.

  1. Collards

Often paired with Carolina BBQ, collards are a staple of good old-fashioned southern cooking. Cooked low and slow, these tasty greens are made even better with the addition on smoky ham, sweet onions, apple cider vinegar, and a touch of sugar. You’ll find this side dish on any respectable Grand Strand menu, but Simply Southern Smokehouse took the top spot for collards on a recent Foursquare list.

  1. Fried Fish

South Carolina is known for fresh seafood, especially served up Calabash style. We’re talking local flounder, catfish, shrimp, crab, and oysters fried to perfection with a side of coleslaw and a basket of hushpuppies. You’ll find a number of great seafood restaurants up and down the Grand Strand Coast, from Little River down to Murrells Inlet.

  1. Pimento Cheese

A picnic classic, creamy Pimento Cheese is a true southern cuisine favorite. Made with cheese, pimentos, Duke’s Mayo (another southern staple), and a touch of heat, this spread is the ultimate appetizer. It’s even better when used in a grilled cheese sandwich, like this Ultimate BLT from the Boathouse in Myrtle Beach, paired with fried green tomatoes.

  1. Shrimp and Grits

As porridge made from coarsely ground corn meal, grits are often served with butter and sugar at breakfast time. Grits are also served as a savory dish on southern tables. No two restaurants make Shrimp and Grits exactly the same. Some add smoked sausage or bacon, others add hot sauce, but all include South Carolina shrimp. The Shack in North Myrtle Beach makes a great dish at a reasonable price, or you can make your own with this recipe from Southern Living.

  1. Sweet Tea

In South Carolina, we like our tea sweet! You may find unsweetened tea on the menu, but for a true southern experience, order up an ice-cold glass of sweet tea. No doubt you’ll find it at every Grand Strand restaurant, from the casual boardwalk eatery to the fancy oceanfront establishment. You’ll thank us later.

Looking for a grand ocean adventure? Take a trip to the Grand Strand and prepare to get soaked! From thrilling activities like surfing and wakeboarding, to more peaceful diversions like kayaking and parasailing, the Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach area is a watersports paradise, offering fun for all ages and levels of skill. Here are a few of the most popular watersports to try on your next Grand Strand vacation.

Parasailing: This popular watersport is ideal for vacationers seeking a beautiful birds-eye view of the Grand Strand coast. Expect to soar hundreds of feet over the water, whether you choose a one, two or three-person flight. Parasailing is a unique experience in that it is both exciting and serene, and that is why it tops our list.

Kayaking: Speaking of serene, kayaking is a relaxing watersport that lets you take in the natural beauty of the Grand Strand. This watersport lets you drift through the calm waters of our local salt-water marshes and creeks, or float downstream on the Waccamaw River, while spotting Loggerhead turtles, Bottle Nose dolphins, and other local wildlife.

Surfing: Want to catch a wave on your Grand Strand vacation? There are plenty of places to take surf lessons along the South Carolina coast, like Kokopelli Surf Camp in North Myrtle Beach. You can also rent surfboards for your trip, or if you’re an experienced surfer, feel free to bring your own board to the beach! Click here for a list of local surf rules.

Paddleboarding: The perfect blend of kayaking and surfing, paddleboarding propels you through the water with a swimming motion. Just use your arms while lying on your stomach or kneeling, or try paddleboarding while standing up on your board, using an oar to move through the waves.

Wakeboarding: If you haven’t been to Shark Wake Park yet, you’re missing out on a full day of fun! Located at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex, this Grand Strand attraction offers an exhilarating cable wakeboarding experience. Instead of a boat, riders are pulled by a high-tech pulley system. Shark Wake Park is open to all skill levels, from first-timers to professionals. There is also a massive floating playground for the young and young at heart.

Jet Skiing: If crashing through the ocean at high speeds sounds like your idea of fun, Jet Skiing may be the activity for you. To rent a Jet Ski, you must be at least 18 years old with a valid drivers license, however, a 16-year-old with a valid license can operate a Jet Ski with parental consent. Most Jet Ski rentals are on a first come, first serve basis — so be prepared to get there early.

Vacations are for making memories, being adventurous and enjoying new experiences — maybe that’s why watersports are such a popular pastime on the Grand Strand. Contact Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach for a great place to stay, and ask about our specials!

There’s a new educational exhibition at Broadway at the Beach this summer, and it’s one not to be missed! BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion exposes the inner workings of the human body through anatomical displays, artfully created reproductions, and actual human specimens, including 100 organs and six full bodies. Visitors vacationing on the Grand Strand can connect with these human artifacts to better understand their own bodies.

Called “the most amazing exhibit of our time,” BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion gives the general public a fascinating look at what only doctors and scientists would normally see first hand. This eye-opening exhibition literally goes “under the skin,” exposing the intricacy of the human body and highlighting anatomy studies over the past 1,000 years.

In case you’re wondering how they do it, specimens have been carefully preserved through a polymer impregnation process. This process replaces fluids with polymers that prevent decay and decomposition. The tour is self-guided, but plan to spend an hour or two going through the galleries.

BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion is tastefully done and is considered appropriate for all ages, with supplemental guides offered online for families who wish to learn more. Of course, every individual is different, and parents are encouraged to use their best judgment — for more information and for a small sample of what you will see, please visit bodiesmyrtle.com.

Tickets to BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion start at $15.50. Discounted tickets of $12.50 are available for seniors ages 65 and up, as well as students, military personnel and their family members. Tickets for children ages 5 to 14 are $10.50, and age four and under are free. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 12. The exhibition is located at Broadway at the Beach, at 1138 Celebrity Circle in Myrtle Beach, next to Margaritaville.

Catch Bodies in Motion while you still can. This traveling exhibit is scheduled to run through September 29, 2019. For a great deal on a rental property during your stay on the Grand Strand, contact Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach, and ask about our summer specials!

Contrary to popular belief, a good bagel can be found in the south! If you’re craving an “everything with cream cheese” or “sesame with ham, egg and Provolone” during your Grand Strand vacation, look no further than these local establishments. All are serving up fresh bagels to satisfy your hunger, so grab a dozen, and hit the beach with the best bagels on the Grand Strand.

The Bagel Factory

The Bagel Factory has been making some of the best bagels in Myrtle Beach for over 10 years. On any given day, there are 17 different bagels to choose from, and 10 different spreads. Crusty brown on the outside, and chewy on the inside, these bagels are the real deal — yes, they boil their bagels before baking! The Bagel Factory serves breakfast and lunch daily at several area locations, including one on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, three in Myrtle Beach, and one in Murrells Inlet. Visit their website for details and to view their menu.

Krave Bagel Bistro

Krave Bagel Bistro is located on Highway 17 S. in North Myrtle Beach and offers up a true Northern style experience. Each bagel is hand rolled, boiled and then baked to perfection. Krave has 12 different bagels on the menu, as well as homemade bread, rolls and croissants. Try one of their gourmet deli sandwiches or freshly prepared tuna salad on a warm bagel. Not a fan of tuna? Krave has homemade chicken and egg salad, too! Other delicious options include Lox and a variety of unique cream cheese spreads. Click here to see their complete menu. Krave also has a drive up window and patio seating.

Bagel Port Café and Deli

This cozy Myrtle Beach breakfast and lunch spot makes their bagels fresh daily. Located at the Galleria Plaza on the corner of Highway 17 N. and Lake Arrowhead Road, Bagel Port Café and Deli has a good selection, from plain to everything — but the salt bagel is by far the most popular with locals and visitors alike. If you’re a bagel snob, you may find the texture is more on the soft side, but never fear. The breakfast sandwiches are tasty and the cream cheese is thick and abundant. Click here to view the menu.

Of course, these are just a sampling of the delicious bagels that can be found up and down the Grand Strand. Other stops include Bagel Doc near Little River, Jersey Bagels and Subs in Conway, Big Apple Bagels and Benjamin’s Bakery in Surfside Beach, and several more in the surrounding areas.

While those on the list are mostly mom and pop shops owned by northern transplants living on the Grand Strand, you also can’t go wrong with a quick stop at Panera Bread or Dunkin Donuts on your way the beach. The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is dedicated to being one of the finest visual arts museums in the Carolinas. Housed in a quaint 1920’s villa overlooking the ocean in Myrtle Beach, visitors to the museum will find unique, interactive exhibits, as well as permanent collections of regional art. This summer, two special exhibits can be seen. The first, Emily Esdaile Weston (1810-1886) | The Legacy of a Planter’s Wife, showcases 105 illustrations of our coastal landscape during the Civil War era. The second, Can’t You Sea?, brings awareness to one of our world’s most immediate and biggest environmental problems: plastic ocean pollution.

“Art is powerful. It has the ability to communicate important social, political and environmental issues in a way that is loud and unyielding in its resolve and at the same time playful and beautiful in its approach.”

According to the museum’s website, the ocean contains an estimated 150 million tons of plastic, with 8 million tons added annually. Can’t You Sea? is an exhibition of ARTifacts created by six artists/activists: Dianna Cohen, Alejandro Duran, Sayaka Ganz, Pam Longobardi, Aurora Robson and Kirkland Smith, who employ discarded plastic as both an artistic medium and as subject matter. While helping make the world a better place by keeping plastic out of our oceans, beaches and waterways, these artists are bringing awareness to this increasing environmental threat by using that plastic to make beautiful art objects that speak to the dangers of ocean plastic pollution. In addition, there will be an enriching series of educational programs for all ages designed to accommodate the exhibition’s conservation efforts, including a fascinating lecture series titled Planet or Plastic.

Both summer exhibits can be seen until early September of this year. The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is located at
3100 South Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. Admission is free to the public, but donations are accepted and encouraged.
