Want to get that picture perfect vacation photo? Those beach shots are spectacular, but if you want an exciting and unique paparazzi experience, you need to plan a trip to the Hollywood Wax Museum in Myrtle Beach. Here, you can strike a pose with your favorite “A-list celebrities,” as your adoring fans snap away! Costume pieces, backdrops and props help you get in on the action and will inspire fun photo ops that are more than share-worthy. Here is what you can expect when you go.

Get Starstruck

At the Hollywood Wax Museum in Myrtle Beach, the hand-sculpted wax figures are so remarkably life-like, you will feel like you are really rubbing elbows with pop culture icons. Each figure takes more than three months to create. The process starts with a simple lump of clay, some measurements, and dozens of photos. The artistry is amazing and the end result truly captures the fine details and expressions that bring these figures to life. Along the way, you’ll also learn interesting details about you favorite stars, like their pets, pet-peeves, and accomplishments.

Say Cheese

Prop stations are filled with fun garb that enhances the experience. Grab a tiara to walk the red carpet with Sandra Bullock, Will Smith, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Don a fedora with Frank Sinatra or a pirate hat with Johnny Depp. Pump iron with the Rock, or share a trophy with Dale Earnhardt. You can also cuddle up close to Bradley Cooper, enjoy breakfast at Tiffany’s with Audrey Hepburn, marry George Clooney, escape from King Kong’s grip, and get beamed up with the Star Trek crew.

Movie stars include Harrison Ford (as Indiana Jones), Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Bruce Lee, Sylvester Stalone (as Rocky), Julia Roberts, Marilyn Monroe, Al Pacino (as the Godfather), Tom Cruise, and Cameron Diaz, to name a few. There are also figures of musicians like Dolly Parton, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Johnny Cash, Lady Gaga, and Madonna, sports stars like Tiger Woods, and many more wax celebrities. There is even a section devoted to horror movie villains!

Open 365 days a year, the Hollywood Wax Museum Entertainment Center is located across from Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach. You can’t miss the building — It made the list as one of 11 Bizarre Roadside Attractions In South Carolina That Will Make You Look Twice (along with Wonderworks) by Only In Your State. The Hollywood Wax Museum Entertainment Center was also recently named a “Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence Attraction.” For ticket info to the Hollywood Wax Museum Entertainment Center, click here.

Autumn is a romantic time to visit the Grand Strand. The summer crowds have dispersed, you no longer need reservations at upscale restaurants, and you may even find you have the beach all to yourselves. Here are a few of our favorite activities for couples looking to plan a romantic autumn getaway on the Grand Strand.

Horseback Riding On The Beach

If you are vacationing in North Myrtle Beach this fall, take a tip from all those romance novels and plan a horseback ride on the beach. Inlet Point Plantation lets you trot across the sand and surf on picturesque Waites Island. Experienced guides will lead you across undeveloped land on a scenic plantation tour, beach trail, or Intracoastal Waterway ride on a majestic steed. Up the romance factor by booking a private sunset or moonrise tour. Excursions last one or two hours, but extended tours are available for couples wishing to enjoy the beauty of Waites Island a little longer.

Wine Tasting

The Grand Strand is a grand destination for wine lovers. Stop in for a tasting at one of our many local wineries, like Coastal Carolina Winery at Broadway at the Beach, or Carolina Vineyards Winery and Duplin Winery at Barefoot Landing. Or visit La Belle Amie Vineyard in Little River. This operating vineyard is open to the public for wine tastings and live music on the deck or shaded lawn area. Check out their website for a schedule of events.

SkyWheel

Towering nearly 200 feet over the oceanfront boardwalk in the heart of Myrtle Beach, the SkyWheel is a one of a kind romantic experience. Take a nighttime spin in one of the climate-controlled gondolas, and experience breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean with your sweetheart by your side. For first class service, opt for the VIP Flight with leather seats, glare-free glass, and a glass-bottom floor! You’ll also get double the flight time, which means more time to snuggle close with your honey.

Moonlit Stroll

The Grand Strand stretches from Little River south, with over 60 miles of beautiful coastline along the way. And what could be more romantic than a moonlight stroll on a sandy beach, hand in hand with the one you love? Bring a picnic dinner and don’t forget a cozy beach blanket! You can watch the sun set as glistening waves caress the shore, and collect seashells as a souvenir of your romantic Grand Strand Getaway.

Romantic Restaurants

In addition to our stunning beaches, the Grand Strand is famous for fabulous, fresh seafood. Craving a candlelit dinner for two? There is a plethora of romantic restaurants to choose from up and down the coast, and all are serving up ambiance and a delicious menu for your special evening. For a list of the ten most romantic restaurants in the Myrtle Beach area from Trip Advisor, click here. And be sure to save room for a decadent dessert!

Of course, the first step in planning a romantic autumn getaway is finding the perfect place to stay.  Contact Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach, and fall in love with the Grand Strand all over again this fall.

In a recent blog, we discussed signature southern foods and where to find them on the Grand Strand. While truly tasty, the list was comprised entirely of savory dishes — with the exception of sweet tea, of course. With Halloween on the horizon, it’s time we explore the sweetest side of the beach, with the tastiest sweet treats on the Grand Strand!

Let Them Eat Cake

For a taste of the sweet life, stop by Crumb Buns Bakery in North Myrtle Beach, where cupcakes are $1 every Tuesday! Try the Southern Coconut Cupcake. It’s moist with just the right amount of sweetness. On the south side of town, you’ll find Coccadots Cake Shop, three time contestant and winner of Food Network’s Cupcake Wars in 2013. This little shop offers a variety of creatively decorated cupcakes, with unique flavors like Butterbeer and Caramel Dipped Apple.

I Want Candy

While strolling the shops at Barefoot Landing or Broadway at the Beach, you’ll find a number of sweet candy shops, including the Fudgery, Wee R Sweetz, and IT’SUGAR. Be sure to stop by River Street Sweets to try their world-famous Pecan Praline and Southern Living Magazine award-winning Fudge. Craving more sugar? Sugar Life is a huge candy bar with three Grand Strand locations. Or stop by The Uncommon Chocolatier at The Market Common in Myrtle Beach for decadent handmade chocolates.

We All Scream For Ice Cream

Looking for handcrafted ice cream during your Grand Strand vacation? There are a number of tasty ice cream parlors to try, like the Crafty Cow and Sweet Molly’s Creamery at Barefoot Landing, or Kilwins at Broadway at the Beach. Also in North Myrtle Beach are The Original Painters stand and Melt, which was recently named the Best Ice Cream in South Carolina by Food & Wine. Or try the homemade gelato at the newly opened Café Gelato in Myrtle Beach!

Mmmmmmm…. Donuts

If you crave warm, freshly made donuts, the Grand Strand has you covered! Some of these donut shops, like Duck Donuts, are made to order. You can pick your own toppings for a custom donut creation with endless combinations! We recommend the popular Maple Bacon at Peace, Love and Little Donuts at the Market Common.

This is just a small sampling of the many wonderful Grand Strand establishments offering satisfyingly sweet treats, like the Key Lime Pie with a delightful pecan crust from Croissants Bakery or Ohana Hawaiian Shaved Ice.  But you can’t try any of them if you aren’t here! For a sweet place to stay this fall, contact Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach, and ask about our specials. And keep sharing those Grand Strand family vacation pics! Did you know sharks have several rows of teeth in each jaw, and that their teeth tend to fall out pretty easily? It’s true! Sharks are constantly losing and regenerating teeth by the thousands, and those little (and sometimes big) treasures will end up washing ashore on the beach at some point.

If you happen to find a tooth with a white crown and root, chances are it’s not that old. But if you happen to find a tooth that is darkly colored, you have found an actual fossil! Most of the shark teeth found on the Carolina coast are fossilized, and some belong to extinct species that date back millions of years. In fact, several giant Megalodon shark teeth have been found along the Grand Strand in the past several years — as well as a Mastodon tooth this past summer! That’s quite a vacation souvenir.

Here are some fun tips for finding shark teeth on the Grand Strand:

  • Not sure when to begin your search? The best time to find shark teeth is when the tide is rolling in. Low tide is another good time to search.

  • Not sure where to look? Stick to the shell beds along the coastline, where the water pushes ashore and then recedes, leaving behind a bounty of treasure.

  • Not having much luck on the sand? Each wave has the potential of bringing in new teeth, so try your luck spotting some in shallow water.

  • Not sure what to look for? When combing the beach for shark teeth, look for pieces that are triangular, very shiny, and black.

  • Not sure if what you found is a shark tooth? Wet shell bits are shiny and can fit the above description. Shark teeth will also have a gum line at the base and ridges along the edge that come to a sharp point.

You’ll have to sift through lots of shell bits to find what you seek, so be patient and look carefully! You can purchase tools online to help with your search, or construct a simple fossil sifter to bring on your trip. Click here for instructions from Popular Science.

Some foods are just quintessentially southern. If you’ve never tried a pimento cheese and fried green tomato BLT, collard greens, or sweet tea — to name a few — you are surely missing out! Here are just a few signature southern foods and where to find them on your next Grand Strand vacation!

  1. Boiled Peanuts

Historically, this southern delicacy was often found at late summer social gatherings, when the final peanut crops were boiled for hours in heavily salted water for preservation. With a soft texture similar to beans and easy to peel shells, you can now find boiled peanuts sold by the bag at roadside rest stops along your trip.

  1. Collards

Often paired with Carolina BBQ, collards are a staple of good old-fashioned southern cooking. Cooked low and slow, these tasty greens are made even better with the addition on smoky ham, sweet onions, apple cider vinegar, and a touch of sugar. You’ll find this side dish on any respectable Grand Strand menu, but Simply Southern Smokehouse took the top spot for collards on a recent Foursquare list.

  1. Fried Fish

South Carolina is known for fresh seafood, especially served up Calabash style. We’re talking local flounder, catfish, shrimp, crab, and oysters fried to perfection with a side of coleslaw and a basket of hushpuppies. You’ll find a number of great seafood restaurants up and down the Grand Strand Coast, from Little River down to Murrells Inlet.

  1. Pimento Cheese

A picnic classic, creamy Pimento Cheese is a true southern cuisine favorite. Made with cheese, pimentos, Duke’s Mayo (another southern staple), and a touch of heat, this spread is the ultimate appetizer. It’s even better when used in a grilled cheese sandwich, like this Ultimate BLT from the Boathouse in Myrtle Beach, paired with fried green tomatoes.

  1. Shrimp and Grits

As porridge made from coarsely ground corn meal, grits are often served with butter and sugar at breakfast time. Grits are also served as a savory dish on southern tables. No two restaurants make Shrimp and Grits exactly the same. Some add smoked sausage or bacon, others add hot sauce, but all include South Carolina shrimp. The Shack in North Myrtle Beach makes a great dish at a reasonable price, or you can make your own with this recipe from Southern Living.

  1. Sweet Tea

In South Carolina, we like our tea sweet! You may find unsweetened tea on the menu, but for a true southern experience, order up an ice-cold glass of sweet tea. No doubt you’ll find it at every Grand Strand restaurant, from the casual boardwalk eatery to the fancy oceanfront establishment. You’ll thank us later.

For more signature southern foods and where to find them, check out Food Network’s list of “What to Eat in South Carolina.”  And for a great place to stay on the Grand Strand, contact Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach and ask about our fall specials.

Looking for a grand ocean adventure? Take a trip to the Grand Strand and prepare to get soaked! From thrilling activities like surfing and wakeboarding, to more peaceful diversions like kayaking and parasailing, the Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach area is a watersports paradise, offering fun for all ages and levels of skill. Here are a few of the most popular watersports to try on your next Grand Strand vacation.

Parasailing: This popular watersport is ideal for vacationers seeking a beautiful birds-eye view of the Grand Strand coast. Expect to soar hundreds of feet over the water, whether you choose a one, two or three-person flight. Parasailing is a unique experience in that it is both exciting and serene, and that is why it tops our list.

Kayaking: Speaking of serene, kayaking is a relaxing watersport that lets you take in the natural beauty of the Grand Strand. This watersport lets you drift through the calm waters of our local salt-water marshes and creeks, or float downstream on the Waccamaw River, while spotting Loggerhead turtles, Bottle Nose dolphins, and other local wildlife.

Surfing: Want to catch a wave on your Grand Strand vacation? There are plenty of places to take surf lessons along the South Carolina coast, like Kokopelli Surf Camp in North Myrtle Beach. You can also rent surfboards for your trip, or if you’re an experienced surfer, feel free to bring your own board to the beach! Click here for a list of local surf rules.

Paddleboarding: The perfect blend of kayaking and surfing, paddleboarding propels you through the water with a swimming motion. Just use your arms while lying on your stomach or kneeling, or try paddleboarding while standing up on your board, using an oar to move through the waves.

Wakeboarding: If you haven’t been to Shark Wake Park yet, you’re missing out on a full day of fun! Located at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex, this Grand Strand attraction offers an exhilarating cable wakeboarding experience. Instead of a boat, riders are pulled by a high-tech pulley system. Shark Wake Park is open to all skill levels, from first-timers to professionals. There is also a massive floating playground for the young and young at heart.

Jet Skiing: If crashing through the ocean at high speeds sounds like your idea of fun, Jet Skiing may be the activity for you. To rent a Jet Ski, you must be at least 18 years old with a valid drivers license, however, a 16-year-old with a valid license can operate a Jet Ski with parental consent. Most Jet Ski rentals are on a first come, first serve basis — so be prepared to get there early.

Vacations are for making memories, being adventurous and enjoying new experiences — maybe that’s why watersports are such a popular pastime on the Grand Strand. Contact Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach for a great place to stay, and ask about our specials!

There’s a new educational exhibition at Broadway at the Beach this summer, and it’s one not to be missed! BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion exposes the inner workings of the human body through anatomical displays, artfully created reproductions, and actual human specimens, including 100 organs and six full bodies. Visitors vacationing on the Grand Strand can connect with these human artifacts to better understand their own bodies.

Called “the most amazing exhibit of our time,” BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion gives the general public a fascinating look at what only doctors and scientists would normally see first hand. This eye-opening exhibition literally goes “under the skin,” exposing the intricacy of the human body and highlighting anatomy studies over the past 1,000 years.

In case you’re wondering how they do it, specimens have been carefully preserved through a polymer impregnation process. This process replaces fluids with polymers that prevent decay and decomposition. The tour is self-guided, but plan to spend an hour or two going through the galleries.

BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion is tastefully done and is considered appropriate for all ages, with supplemental guides offered online for families who wish to learn more. Of course, every individual is different, and parents are encouraged to use their best judgment — for more information and for a small sample of what you will see, please visit bodiesmyrtle.com.

Tickets to BODIES HUMAN: Anatomy in Motion start at $15.50. Discounted tickets of $12.50 are available for seniors ages 65 and up, as well as students, military personnel and their family members. Tickets for children ages 5 to 14 are $10.50, and age four and under are free. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 12. The exhibition is located at Broadway at the Beach, at 1138 Celebrity Circle in Myrtle Beach, next to Margaritaville.

Catch Bodies in Motion while you still can. This traveling exhibit is scheduled to run through September 29, 2019. For a great deal on a rental property during your stay on the Grand Strand, contact Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach, and ask about our summer specials!

If you’re craving an “everything with cream cheese” or “sesame with ham, egg and Provolone” during your Grand Strand vacation, look no further than these local establishments. All are serving up fresh bagels to satisfy your hunger, so grab a dozen, and hit the beach with the best bagels on the Grand Strand.

The Bagel Factory

The Bagel Factory has been making some of the best bagels in Myrtle Beach for over 10 years. On any given day, there are 17 different bagels to choose from, and 10 different spreads. Crusty brown on the outside, and chewy on the inside, these bagels are the real deal — yes, they boil their bagels before baking! The Bagel Factory serves breakfast and lunch daily at several area locations, including one on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, three in Myrtle Beach, and one in Murrells Inlet. Visit their website for details and to view their menu.

Krave Bagel Bistro

Krave Bagel Bistro is located on Highway 17 S. in North Myrtle Beach and offers up a true Northern style experience. Each bagel is hand rolled, boiled and then baked to perfection. Krave has 12 different bagels on the menu, as well as homemade bread, rolls and croissants. Try one of their gourmet deli sandwiches or freshly prepared tuna salad on a warm bagel. Not a fan of tuna? Krave has homemade chicken and egg salad, too! Other delicious options include Lox and a variety of unique cream cheese spreads. Click here to see their complete menu. Krave also has a drive up window and patio seating.

Bagel Port Café and Deli

This cozy Myrtle Beach breakfast and lunch spot makes their bagels fresh daily. Located at the Galleria Plaza on the corner of Highway 17 N. and Lake Arrowhead Road, Bagel Port Café and Deli has a good selection, from plain to everything — but the salt bagel is by far the most popular with locals and visitors alike. If you’re a bagel snob, you may find the texture is more on the soft side, but never fear. The breakfast sandwiches are tasty and the cream cheese is thick and abundant. Click here to view the menu.

Of course, these are just a sampling of the delicious bagels that can be found up and down the Grand Strand. Other stops include Bagel Doc near Little River, Jersey Bagels and Subs in Conway, Big Apple Bagels and Benjamin’s Bakery in Surfside Beach, and several more in the surrounding areas.

While those on the list are mostly mom and pop shops owned by northern transplants living on the Grand Strand, you also can’t go wrong with a quick stop at Panera Bread or Dunkin Donuts on your way the beach.
