Coastal Living Magazine recently named Myrtle Beach, South Carolina one of America’s Top 10 Best Beach Towns for Christmas!

“You may think you know this destination from its high-energy spring vibe, but there’s way more to Myrtle Beach, and Christmas is the perfect time to get to know it. Start with 5,500 hand-lit candles at Brookgreen Gardens’ resplendent Nights of a Thousand Candles and proceed to the town’s delightful Festival of Trees at Ripley’s Aquarium (don’t miss the holiday tree scavenger hunt). A whole new world, right?” (Coastal Living)

Thanks for the shout out, Coastal Living… we wholeheartedly agree! Here are four more reasons to celebrate the holiday season on the Grand Strand:

The Great Christmas Light Show in North Myrtle Beach: This spectacular holiday event features over 2 million lights festively displayed along a 1.5-mile drive throughout the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. After the journey through the light show, visitors are invited to park and visit Santa’s Village!

Christmas at Pirate’s Voyage: Take a magical journey with surly Captain Scrooge and his faithful first mate Bob Crachit in this fun and festive show, while enjoying a four-course holiday feast! Packed with heart and comedy (plus astounding gymnastics, high-diving feats, amazing live animals, and a living nativity), this will easily become a favorite family tradition.

The South’s Grandest Christmas Show: This award-winning annual production at the Alabama Theatre is truly a Christmas extravaganza, complete with classic holiday carols and contemporary favorites that celebrate the season — southern style!

The Carolina Opry Christmas Special: This enchanting production is a time-honored tradition that brings the spirit of Christmas to life through music, comedy and dance. Also known as the “Christmas Show of the South,” it features talented guest artists performing alongside Opry favorites and Gospel legends.

Make this year the merriest yet, and give your family the gift of a beach vacation on the Grand Strand. Contact Vacation Rentals of North Myrtle Beach today to get started, and take advantage of our special off-season rates!

Here in South Carolina, we like our Thanksgiving turkey fried, with a side of cornbread dressing and sweet potato pie! And of course our music has to be a little bit country. Bluegrass music was developed in the second half of the 20th century, and has its roots in the American South. Tight vocal harmonies mixed with acoustic instruments like the banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar and upright bass are the Hallmarks of this distinct musical style. It’s considered a sub-genre of country music, with hints of folk, jazz, ragtime and gospel all rolled into one.

If you love good music, Myrtle Beach is the place to be this Thanksgiving weekend! November 26, 27 and 28, the Myrtle Beach Convention Center will be home to the 46th Annual South Carolina State Bluegrass Festival! This incredible indoor festival will feature top Bluegrass acts like Dailey and Vincent, The Spinney Brothers, Lonesome River Band, The Grascals, Lorraine Jordan and The Carolina Road Band, The Malpass Brothers, Big Country Bluegrass, Darin and Brooke Aldridge, The Little Roy and Lizzy Show, Old Friends, Flatt Lonesome and many more!

Ticket prices are $40/day for adults for general admission and $20/day for children ages 7 to 15 for general admission. Reserved seating is also available for $45/day for adults and $25/day for children ages 7 to 15. You also have the option of purchasing three-day admission tickets at a discounted rate. Children under 7 are free with a paid adult. Visit their website for more info.

Looking for a unique family experience outside the norm? Then Myrtle Beach has got you covered! There are plenty of weird and wonderful places here for all ages to discover. First, there’s Wonderworks, an upside down, indoor amusement park that is sure to catch your attention. Then pop on over to the new Hollywood Wax Museum — you’ll be shocked to see how realistic your favorite celebrities look! The next stop, Dinosaurs the Exhibition, where you’ll feel like you traveled back in time to learn about dinosaurs up close! And finally, Ripley’s Odditorium has just enough weirdness to keep even the most reluctant traveler interested. Keep reading for more about the weird and wonderful places to visit in Myrtle Beach!

WonderWorks

This 50,000 square foot indoor amusement park combines education and entertainment with more than 100 hands on exhibits. As the story goes, a once top-secret laboratory was located in the Bermuda Triangle. An experiment went wrong, lifting the laboratory, and carrying it to Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, where it landed upside down. Luckily all of the exhibits remained intact! While the story may be something of a fairytale, the fact that WonderWorks is great for families of all ages remains true.

Children will be delighted when they become a human lightning rod, or create bubbles big enough to fit inside. The braver members of your family can challenge themselves by lying on a bed of 3500 nails or completing the glow-in-the-dark indoor ropes course three stories above the ground. Those feeling silly can create a 3-D image of their body using a gigantic pin wall made of 40,000 pins. Or nudge your active kid to attempt to generate enough power to spin a complete 360-degrees in the Xtreme 360-degrees Bike Challenge.

Other fun and educational zones at WonderWorks include Light & Sound, Space Discovery, Natural Disasters, Physical Challenge, Far Out Art Gallery, and the Imagination Lab.

Ripley’s Odditorium

North Myrtle Beach Ripley's MuseumAt Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Odditorium, you can explore the weird and wonderful that not only Myrtle Beach has to offer, but also the world! Come see a variety of oddities ranging from exotic primitive items, to authentic shrunken heads, visual illusions, and much more! Highlights include an eight-foot tall Transformer sculpture made of scrap car parts, and a Fiji Island mermaid! Captain America, Thor and Iron Man can also be found larger than life in the new, hands-on Tech Depot exhibit. Your family will stay busy, possibly grossed out or amazed, with 12 themed galleries and over 200 exhibits and artifacts within the museum. There is sure to be something for everyone, and we challenge you to visit without learning something new. This museum is located at the corner of 8th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard, right across from the beach. Believe it…. or not!

After your visit to the Odditorium, check out Ripley’s other attractions: The 5-D Moving Theatre, Haunted Adventure, Marvelous Mirror Maze, and, of course, Ripley’s Aquarium.

This museum, located near Broadway at the Beach, allows you to get into the action and feel like a celebrity yourself! Immerse yourself in a world of stardom while joining in on a variety of fun, interactive games. This two-story museum is the only wax museum in the country to devote itself entirely to celebrity figures. These figures are recreated so faithfully; you’ll swear they’re the real thing!

After you play and pose with the stars, stay and save Princess Hannah from her Maze of Mirrors and then make your way through the zombie infested labs of Outbreak! Just look for the Great Ape of Myrtle Beach climbing the building!

Dinosaurs the Exhibition

Kids of all ages will love this opportunity to travel back into our prehistoric past! Come see 25 full-scale animatronic replicas of dinosaurs programmed to move, roar and amaze at Dinosaurs the Exhibition. Even the authentic backgrounds, rocks, plant material and flooring will make you think you’ve gone back in time.

This exhibition spent a couple years touring Europe and has now stomped its way to Myrtle Beach. Learn something new in the Dino Movie Room, let young kids explore the soft play area in the T-Rex Fun House, dig for fossils as a Jr. Paleontologist, or ride a life sized T-Rex or Triceratops! You can find Dinosaurs the Exhibition at Broadway at the Beach.

Learn Carolina Shag

The Carolina Shag is a form of southern swing dancing that originated along the Grand Strand in the 1920s and gained massive popularity in the 40s and 50s. If you are familiar with the Shag, it will conjure up images of beach clubs, like the historic Pad in North Myrtle Beach, where excited teenagers would gather on a wooden dance floor to join in on the craze. Beach music would be playing on the jukebox, and a boy would lead a girl in a smooth, 6-count step, danced in a slot; triple step, triple step, rock step — with some room for improvisation. Many believe the gliding steps and limited upper body movement were created to avoid kicking up sand from the beach, while others say it was to avoid spilling their cool beers on a warm summer night.

Today the Shag is a vital part of South Carolina’s history with a devoted following, and was named the official dance of the state. You may even remember the movie Shag from the late 1980s, starring Phoebe Cates and Bridgette Fonda. Inspired by the dance, the film takes place in 1963, where a group of girlfriends travel to Myrtle Beach for a wild weekend before one of them gets married and the others leave for college. With Shag Festivals and events in the Myrtle Beach Area, SC Shag organizations, and great Shag venues in North Myrtle Beach, the Grand Strand is the place to be if you love Shag dancing or just want to join in on the fun. Swing on down to North Myrtle Beach and learn how to Carolina Shag this spring!

Spring Carolina Shag Events

This week, The Spanish Galleon on Ocean Boulevard, North Myrtle Beach, is hosting the 32nd Annual National Shag Dance Championship Finals. The NSDC started in Myrtle Beach in 1984 and is the longest continuously running shag dance contest in the United States. If you happen to be in the area this weekend and want to experience the excitement of a first-class Shag dancing competition, the event starts at 8PM on March 12, and 7:30PM on March 13 and March 14.

From April 17 – 26, Shag lovers from all over the U.S. head to North Myrtle Beach for the SOS (Society of Stranders) Spring Safari. After being cooped up all winter, the ten-day party for adults features popular bands, and Shag dance instructors offering mass classes for beginners and those looking to boost their skills and learn some new moves. At night, party animals join together to do the Carolina Shag in the local clubs. On the last Saturday of the event, the crowds gather on Main Street for the ACSC (Association of Carolina Shag Clubs) parade, a favorite for visitors and locals alike.
