The Grand Strand is a grand place to be on Father’s Day! Here are a few fun ways to celebrate dear old Dad this summer.

Tee up.

Whether your dad loves to golf or prefers a few rounds of put-put, the Grand Strand has you covered! There’s a reason we’re called the “Golf Capital of the World.” Here, you will find incredible golf courses up and down the coastline, including distinctive signature courses designed by top players in the sport. You will also find some of the best mini-golf courses in the country, including Hawaiian Rumble in North Myrtle Beach, where the US Pro Mini-Golf Masters are held each year.

Go fish.

The Grand Strand has several piers for saltwater fishing in the Atlantic Ocean, or you can take a charter boat on a deep-sea fishing excursion with Dad. We also offer freshwater and inland fishing on the Intracoastal Waterway and the Waccamaw River, as well as smaller rivers, bays and tributaries. A License is not needed when on a charter or fishing on a pier, but is required for freshwater fishing and fishing from the shore. Click here for information on obtaining a fishing license.

Catch a ballgame.

The Grand Strand is home to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, a minor league baseball team in the Southern Division. Right now, they’re offering a Father’s Day Special that includes four tickets, food and beer vouchers, an on-field family photo, and on-field VIP seating for fireworks. You can even play a game of catch on the field before the opening pitch. Click here for details on this exciting offer.

 Drive a NASCAR racecar.

If your father feels the need for speed, head to the Myrtle Beach Speedway for a one-of-a-kind experience he will never forget. The Rookie Experience lets Dad drive a real NASCAR racecar by himself for eight minutes on one of the nation’s premiere speedways. Or opt for a ride along with a professional racing instructor for three to six laps, depending on the package you select. For more information, click here.

Relax on the beach.

This list would not be complete without mentioning the miles and miles of sandy beaches we have here on the Grand Strand. And every father knows there’s no better place for an afternoon nap. Give Dad a day of rest and relaxation by setting up a comfy beach chair and bringing along the latest best seller from his favorite author. And don’t forget the sunscreen!

From old-time favorite games like the Frisbee and Bocce to something original and new like Cornhole, there are plenty of great game options for today’s beach-goer. Sure, you could spend the day relaxing on the sand and surf during your stay in the Myrtle Beach area, but why not have some good clean family fun with the best games to play on the beach?

Catch

The Frisbee has been around for hundreds of years and it still delights both young and old. Of course you will need is a buddy (or man’s best friend) to play. Then watch closely as that famous plastic disk soars through the air and see who can catch the most tosses! If you don’t have a Frisbee, a football will do. And here’s a fun twist…. Find a lightweight, waterproof football made especially for the beach, toss it the ocean and let the little ones scramble to catch it as it rides the waves back onto shore.

Bocce

Another oldie but goodie, this game starts with eight balls in two different colors (usually made of hard plastic resin), and a small white ball called a pallino. Find a nice flat area of sand to play. Divide into two teams, pick a color, and toss the pallino underhand to see where it lands. This is the target. Teams alternate tossing the balls, trying to get closest to the pallino. Balls in the way may be knocked closer to or further from the pallino by their opponents’ or teammates’ balls. After all the balls have been played, the team with the ball closest to the pallino wins!

Cornhole

Cornhole has become one of the most popular beach pastimes in recent years. A cornhole set consists of two smooth wooden boards with a hole, and eight beanbags (four in one color and four in another). Two players or four players can play the game. For singles, both players begin at the same side, while players split into teams with one partner at each end of the playing area for doubles. See who can get the most points by sinking the beanbags into the cornhole!

Are you on your way to the beach and worried that you might forget something on your way out the door? Ever wondered how to make a great beach trip even better? From beach basics to clever hacks you may never have thought of (but will not want to live without), keep this list handy so you won’t miss a thing!

Smooth Sand Away With Baby Powder: Baby powder isn’t just for babies. Throw some in your beach bag and sprinkle it on when the sand just-isn’t-coming-off. Not only will you be sand-free, but you’ll also smell wonderful from the fresh scent! It will also leave your skin feeling silky smooth.

Slather On The Sunscreen: It may seem simple enough to remember to bring sunscreen, but sometimes the simplest things can be overlooked when you are caught up in the excitement of hitting the beach. Lather up at home or at your rental property before traveling to the beach to ensure that you and your family are covered, and throw the bottle in your beach bag immediately before you forget. Most experts recommend nothing less than SPF 30, and it is important to re-apply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming. If you are super sensitive to the sun, also bring along a hat and beach umbrella — you would not want to be caught without them!

Build A Better Beach Blanket: Are you sick of all of your items disappearing along with your beach blanket with a simple gust of wind? Consider sewing pockets onto each corner of your blanket so that you can tuck shoes, books, water bottles, sunscreen and more into the corners. This will keep your items in place, and weighs the blanket down. The same concept also works with beach towels! If your sewing skills aren’t up to par, try using an old fitted sheet. As a bonus, the fitted edge will turn upwards to keep sand out so that your area is clean, tidy and organized, helping you to finally relax worry-free!

Protect Your Phone: Bring your electronics in sealable plastic bags so that they will be protected from the sand and surf. Plus, you can still use the touch screen through the bag on most electronics.

Chill The Aloe: 100% Aloe Vera Gel can offer cooling and soothing relief after a day out in the sun. To make it even better, pop your aloe in the fridge before you hit the beach. The cool temperature will increase the relief even more!

Hide Your Valuables: Instead of the typical keys in the shoes, why not try something different? Consider cutting a wide slit from side to side in an old (clean) sunscreen bottle to make it easy to place and remove items from the bottom with a little squeeze. You could also borrow a (again clean) baby diaper from a friend to wrap up your items. No one wants to touch that! Your items will instantly be safer and no one will suspect a thing.

Beach Babies: If you have little ones in tow, bring a small, inflatable swimming pool and add a little seawater to keep your baby or young toddler busy and cool while the bigger kids play in the sand and surf. Not only will you know where your little one is, but it will also keep them from eating the sand. Especially if you add a few squirt toys and sailboats to the mix! Don’t forget to pinpoint where the nearest restroom is before you get settled in on the beach. When you or your child need to go, you’ll know exactly where it is, and how far away you’ll need to walk! And bring a change of clothes in case those wet bathing suits become bothersome.

Water, Water Everywhere: It is super easy to get dehydrated after spending a full day out in the sun. Bring lots of bottles of water to keep everyone in your party hydrated and refreshed. If you don’t have a cooler, consider storing the water bottles in the freezer before packing them. They’ll stay nice and cool much longer this way. While you’re at it, bring along some satisfying snacks to keep your energy up for a day of fun in the sun!

Gotta Wear Cheap Shades: Leave your high-end sunglasses at home and instead consider hitting the dollar store before the beach to grab a cheap pair of shades you won’t mind losing. It’s easy to get caught up in the joy of the ocean, and worrying about your high-end sunglasses should be far from your mind. Many cheaper sunglasses still offer the same UVA and UVB protection, yet are constructed a bit flimsier. If you happen to lose them, or if they get scratched, they are easy to replace!

Follow these smart tips and make every day a day at the beach!

There is still time place your votes in our 2015 Summer Beach Baby Photo Contest! You can vote once a day and get your friends to VOTE too to increase your favorite baby’s chances of winning one of three fabulous prizes! Voting ends on August 31st, and winners will be announced on September 1st.
