Picture this. Miles of lush green land sprouting bold, sun-kissed grape vines as far as the eye can see are being tended with loving-care by generations of family farmers…. No this isn’t California; it’s South Carolina!

South Carolina is home to unique grapes that thrive in the summer heat of the region. In fact, the muscadine grape has been used in fine wines dating back to the 16th century. These large, colorful globes of fruit have a thick skin and are ripe for wine making. Muscadine grapes are purple or black, and are often used in sweet wines. Bronze or gold muscadine grapes are called scuppernongs.

Muscadines are considered by many to be the healthiest and best grapes for winemaking. They contain six times the resveratrol and 40 percent more antioxidants than other grape varieties. Muscadines are also used in jellies, jams, sauces, pies, syrups, and juices.

When visiting the Myrtle Beach area, why not sample some wines made with the fruits of this great region? Relax and enjoy a taste of the south!
