The North Myrtle Beach Area Historical Museum works to foster a deeper appreciation for local history, culture and science. Located at 799 2nd Avenue North, the exhibits and programs feature stories that range from the region’s first inhabitants to the development of the tourist industry that exists today.
History Of The Museum
Back in 2005, a local businessman named Dick Hester envisioned a museum that would highlight the history of the northeast region of coastal South Carolina. He wanted to share collections of local artifacts and stories with the thousands of visitors who enjoy our area every year.
Our community has a distinct legacy beginning more than 10,000 years ago when the Native Americans lived off of our bountiful land. From the South Carolina/North Carolina line, to south of Barefoot Resort and west to Longs, each one of these communities has its own personal stories to tell. The museum continues to gather memorabilia and information on all of these areas for locals and tourists to enjoy.
Bob Hope: An American Treasure
The North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum has been proud to feature a blockbuster exhibit this summer, titled Bob Hope: An American Treasure. Presented by the World Golf Hall of Fame, this exhibit offers opportunities to learn about Bob Hope’s early years, when his career was first budding, to some of his last performances. His story is shown through first-person comedy, combining anecdotes, quotes and jokes. The exhibit features more than 170 artifacts, 200 vintage photos, and seven video displays. Examine his life beginning with an immigrant family, rising to become a star of stage, screen and radio, as well as his relationships with U.S. presidents, the U.S. military, and his love of golf. Learn about how the Guinness Book made him the most “honored man” and how he brought comedy to America and the rest of the world.
The North Myrtle Beach Area Historical Museum is honored to host this exhibit, a nod to an incredible man worth remembering. It is the first time this exhibit has been shown on the east coast. Other notable places include Denver, CO, New Orleans, LA, Green Bay, WI and Greenwich, England. Sadly, this is your last chance to catch Bob Hope: An American Treasure at the North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum. The exhibit’s extended run ends on September 18th. As a special salute to Bob Hope’s favorite audience, all vets and military enjoy FREE admission now through September 18th in appreciation for preserving our freedom.
In addition to historical exhibits and educational programs, the museum also offers Murder-Mystery Dinners. Guests can spend an evening full of laughter and suspense with an original who-done-it performance written and directed by Kathy Tiso. The murder-mystery troupe, Mrs. Murder and Friends, performs a show full of intrigue and mayhem. The evening includes family-style dining and beverages. Guests are invited to pay close attention, ask questions and help solve the murder mystery.
Museum hours are Tuesday and Friday from 10AM to 8PM and Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10AM to 4PM. Sunday hours are from 12PM to 4PM. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors/students/military, $6 for youths age five through twelve, and free for members and children under the age of five.
