On the southern end of Ocean Boulevard (also known as Highway 17 Business), you’ll find the entrance to the old Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. Now home to the Market Common; the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing once used this area as home base while bravely defending of our country. As threats to our national security changed, the mission of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base also changed. After being deactivated in March 1993, this patch of land was turned over to the city and now serves a new noble purpose. Now called Warbird Park, visitors can see several old fighter aircraft up close and personal on the grounds, including:
While there, be sure to stop by the Wall of Service, which features the names of everyone, military and civilian, who honorably served at the base between 1941 and its closure in 1993. Currently, there are over 2,400 names, and the City of Myrtle Beach is in the process of building a second Wall of Service.
Warbird Park is proudly dedicated to the men and women of the United States Air Force, and admission is free.
