Boy with flag

Myrtle Beach hosts a variety of events to honor our military, and to thank all of those who have served, all throughout the month of May. The much-anticipated Military Appreciation Days include active duty military personnel, reserves, the National Guard, and veterans that served all branches. Military families and personnel can also look for discounts at local restaurants and attractions around town during the entire month of May. From the Military Appreciation Days parade to the big Family Picnic of 2015, there will be plenty of ways for everyone to help commemorate those who sacrificed their lives to protect us.

Everyone’s invited to kick off the Military Appreciation Days with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Tribute and the 50th Anniversary Salute to Vietnam Veterans. The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Tribute will take place at noon in the Fellowship Hall at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 33rd Avenue North on May 2. Take the chance during this event to welcome home these men and women and thank them for their service. The 50th Anniversary Salute to Vietnam Veterans runs from May 14-16 and will feature exhibits such as the Agent Orange Quilt of Tears and a visiting Vietnam Memorial Wall. Both will be on display Thursday, Friday and Saturday on Ocean Boulevard, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues North. Six Vietnam-era helicopters of all sizes will be available for viewing at many events, including a visit to the Convention Center, the parade, and the Big Family Picnic. The free viewing is thanks to the North Carolina Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, which has worked to preserve these birds in their proper state.

The Military Appreciation Days Parade kicks off at 10:30AM on Armed Forces Day, Saturday May 16, traveling Ocean Boulevard from 27th Avenue North to Ninth Avenue North. Come out and see the Grand Marshal, army veteran J.R. Martinez, lead the parade. Martinez suffered severe wounds during his tour of duty in Iraq in 2003. While his recovery took 34 months, today he is recognized as a successful actor, motivational speaker, author, and winner of Dancing with the Stars.

The Big Family Picnic is on Saturday May 16, from noon to 2PM. This picnic is a free event for all military personnel and veterans, along with their families. J.R. Martinez will be available for a meet and greet following the parade at the Big Family Picnic. The Andrew Thielen Big Band will headline with a live show, and the Omar Shriners Chefs will prepare lunch. Kids’ activities, military exhibits and more will be sure to make this family-friendly event a favorite!

The Veterans March on Ocean Boulevard will be held Monday, May 25 at 9AM, starting at 16th Avenue North, and ending at the Pavilion site at Ninth Avenue North with a brief ceremony. Be aware, this special Memorial Day march isn’t a parade, so it won’t feature floats or vehicles, unless a vehicle is required for veterans who are not able to walk.

The Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony takes place at 11AM on the Plaza at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Monday, May 25. This public event cordially invites anyone to attend to say “thank you” to all military men, women and their families. The Grand Strand Patriot Alliance will be providing speakers, the Missing Man Table and an honor guard salute.

Check out https://www.militaryappreciationdays.com/ for other events and ways to honor our military. Whether you keep with tradition and visit the parade, or decide to try something new and check out the South Carolina Civil War Museum or some of the many historic sites in the region, there are plenty of ways the Myrtle Beach area can help you celebrate and honor our military throughout the month of May.

The South Carolina Civil War Museum

Looking for a family-friendly alternative to teach the kids some history this May? Consider checking out the South Carolina Civil War Museum off of 4857 Highway 17 Bypass South, in Myrtle Beach. This museum houses three important Civil War collections, an in-depth collection of edged weapons, period firearms, uniforms, and a panoramic view of the war from both sides. The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10AM-6PM.

The Battleship U.S.S. North Carolina

Across the river from Wilmington, NC, just north of the Myrtle Beach area, sits the Battleship U.S.S. North Carolina. Step on the deck and step back in history to World War II. Open every day of the year as a memorial, the Battleship U.S.S. North Carolina will also be hosting a Memorial Day event including an emotional opening ceremony, a special guest speaker, and military musical arrangements provided by a military band. The public is invited to pay their respects at this free event.
