In the mood for some live music, delicious food, and wine tasting? Wine Wednesdays at La Belle Amie Vineyard in Little River, South Carolina has what you crave! Home of Twisted Sisters wines, the Vineyard creates fun and unique wines such as “Island Mama: Shake Those Pineapples,” a red blend, and “Sweet Carolina Girl,” a chilled sweet white wine. Wine by the glass or bottle is available all day from 10AM-5PM, with plenty of seating available under the cabanas and pavilion. Admission is free (sorry, no pets or outside beverages allowed). Grab a friend (or a few) and indulge in some necessary “me” time with half-priced wine tastings on Wine Wednesday — $2.75 includes tasting, tax, and a wine glass!

La Belle Amie Vineyard is part of a former tobacco plantation that has been owned by the Bellamy family since the 1800s. La Belle Amie, meaning “the beautiful friend,” is the European origin of the family name. Vicki, whose family has a long history of winemaking, currently runs the vineyard. Vicki’s ancestors from the south of France passed down their winemaking skills to Uncle Gifford, who makes the wine from “the old grapevines,” also known as the vines from four large vine arbors. Two of these arbors are over 100 years old and the other two are about 80 years old! The grapes from these vines are also used to make the grape preserves sold at the shop.

Uncle Gifford famously used a wooden barrel to make wine for friends and family. Visitors can still see the barrel on display in front of the shop, as well as an antique spinning wheel used to make cloth from cotton grown on the farm. Gifford passed away at the age of 83 in 1993. The Vineyard’s sweet red muscadine wine, “Gifford’s Red,” was named in his honor.

After Gifford passed, his niece Vicki came up with the idea of La Belle Amie Vineyard. By 1995 she arranged for the clearing of the fields, and soon planted Vineyard #1. In the spring of 1996, Vineyard #2 was trellised and planted, but then came a series of devastating hurricanes from 1996 to 1999. With help from friends and family, the Vineyard eventually recovered, and continues to thrive as a top destination in the Grand Strand area!

La Belle Amie Vineyard also hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year, including the upcoming New Year’s Bonfire. Wine tastings are offered Monday through Saturday from 10AM-5:30PM. Guests are invited into the wine tasting room to sample private label wines, as well as a variety of foods that include specialty sauces, dressings, and more! For $3, you can sample any six wines of your choice, and for $2 more you can keep the wine glass!

The vineyard’s gift shop features a nice selection of wine accessories and unique gifts. After shopping, you can relax on the front porch in one of the rocking chairs, have a glass of wine, and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the farm. Then bring a bottle or two back to your rental property near the beach to enjoy later. Now that’s what we call a vacation!

Boy with flag

Myrtle Beach hosts a variety of events to honor our military, and to thank all of those who have served, all throughout the month of May. The much-anticipated Military Appreciation Days include active duty military personnel, reserves, the National Guard, and veterans that served all branches. Military families and personnel can also look for discounts at local restaurants and attractions around town during the entire month of May. From the Military Appreciation Days parade to the big Family Picnic of 2015, there will be plenty of ways for everyone to help commemorate those who sacrificed their lives to protect us.

Everyone’s invited to kick off the Military Appreciation Days with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Tribute and the 50th Anniversary Salute to Vietnam Veterans. The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Tribute will take place at noon in the Fellowship Hall at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 33rd Avenue North on May 2. Take the chance during this event to welcome home these men and women and thank them for their service. The 50th Anniversary Salute to Vietnam Veterans runs from May 14-16 and will feature exhibits such as the Agent Orange Quilt of Tears and a visiting Vietnam Memorial Wall. Both will be on display Thursday, Friday and Saturday on Ocean Boulevard, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues North. Six Vietnam-era helicopters of all sizes will be available for viewing at many events, including a visit to the Convention Center, the parade, and the Big Family Picnic. The free viewing is thanks to the North Carolina Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, which has worked to preserve these birds in their proper state.

The Military Appreciation Days Parade kicks off at 10:30AM on Armed Forces Day, Saturday May 16, traveling Ocean Boulevard from 27th Avenue North to Ninth Avenue North. Come out and see the Grand Marshal, army veteran J.R. Martinez, lead the parade. Martinez suffered severe wounds during his tour of duty in Iraq in 2003. While his recovery took 34 months, today he is recognized as a successful actor, motivational speaker, author, and winner of Dancing with the Stars.

The Big Family Picnic is on Saturday May 16, from noon to 2PM. This picnic is a free event for all military personnel and veterans, along with their families. J.R. Martinez will be available for a meet and greet following the parade at the Big Family Picnic. The Andrew Thielen Big Band will headline with a live show, and the Omar Shriners Chefs will prepare lunch. Kids’ activities, military exhibits and more will be sure to make this family-friendly event a favorite!

The Veterans March on Ocean Boulevard will be held Monday, May 25 at 9AM, starting at 16th Avenue North, and ending at the Pavilion site at Ninth Avenue North with a brief ceremony. Be aware, this special Memorial Day march isn’t a parade, so it won’t feature floats or vehicles, unless a vehicle is required for veterans who are not able to walk.

The Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony takes place at 11AM on the Plaza at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Monday, May 25. This public event cordially invites anyone to attend to say “thank you” to all military men, women and their families. The Grand Strand Patriot Alliance will be providing speakers, the Missing Man Table and an honor guard salute.

Picture this. Miles of lush green land sprouting bold, sun-kissed grape vines as far as the eye can see are being tended with loving-care by generations of family farmers…. No this isn’t California; it’s South Carolina!

South Carolina is home to unique grapes that thrive in the summer heat of the region. In fact, the muscadine grape has been used in fine wines dating back to the 16th century. These large, colorful globes of fruit have a thick skin and are ripe for wine making. Muscadine grapes are purple or black, and are often used in sweet wines. Bronze or gold muscadine grapes are called scuppernongs.

Muscadines are considered by many to be the healthiest and best grapes for winemaking. They contain six times the resveratrol and 40 percent more antioxidants than other grape varieties. Muscadines are also used in jellies, jams, sauces, pies, syrups, and juices.

When visiting the Myrtle Beach area, why not sample some wines made with the fruits of this great region? Relax and enjoy a taste of the south!

La Belle Amie Vineyard

La Belle Amie Vineyard is located in Little River, South Carolina, not far from the Myrtle Beach area. Nestled amongst lush pine and oak trees, this tobacco plantation turned winery is a relaxing, exquisite place to enjoy a glass or two. The vineyard is also home to a number of music festivals throughout the year. Stop by for wine tastings every Monday through Saturday and enjoy everything from sweet whites to dry reds. The vineyard’s Twisted Sister line of wines includes 17 varieties with creative names like Southern Gentlemen and Bikini Blush.
