12-22-16-vrnmb-wonderworks-image

It’s the most wonderful time of the year here in the Myrtle Beach area, so why not visit an attraction filled with wonder during your off-season stay? WonderWorks is open 365 days a year, and is a great place to go for indoor fun, especially during the colder months when crowds are minimal. With more than 100 hand-on exhibits, six WonderZones, and incredible physical challenges waiting to be explored, winter is wonderful at WonderWorks!

If you’ve visited Myrtle Beach before, you may have seen the big upside down building at Broadway at the Beach. According to legend, this once top-secret laboratory in the Bermuda Triangle was swept away in an experiment gone awry. Professor Wonder and his team of scientists were working on creating and harnessing the power of a tornado. But the swirling vortex ripped the building from its foundation and carried it to Myrtle Beach, where it landed upside down on top of a crab shack! Lucky for us, all of the experiments inside were unharmed. Of course, guests must be properly aligned and inverted before they can begin their adventure. But never fear, the process is actually rather fun!

Natural Disasters

Your journey begins in the Natural Disasters Zone, where you can experience 84 mile per hour winds in the Hurricane Shack. Become a human lightning rod while the Tesla Coil emits 100,000 volts of electricity. See how long you can hold your hand in ice-cold water. Then check out the Google Earth virtual globe and map, and travel anywhere you want to go in a matter of seconds.

Physical Challenges

WonderWorks is filled with various physical challenges that will put your abilities to the test. Find out what will happen when you lie down on a bed of 3500 nails, take a seat on the pulley chair, or try to generate enough power to complete a 365-degree revolution on the Xtreme 360 bikes. Test your athletic skills by playing soccer, baseball, and football virtually. Create a 3-dimensional image of your body on a wall made of 40,000 plastic pins. Play Mindball, a biofeedback game that lets you move a ball with your mind using EEG technology. Then take the Spacewalk challenge at the glow-in-the-dark indoor ropes course, where you’ll scale a maximum of 36 feet while crossing over 20 different obstacles.

Sights & Sounds

Bust a move to the music and watch your shadow multiply into different colors and patterns. Strike a pose and see your shadow appear right before your eyes. Jump from key to key on the giant piano. Check out the 6D XD Extreme Motion Theatre, a simulate thrill ride featuring a rotating schedule of movies. Try to answer riddles and understand optical illusions in the Far Out gallery located in the stairwells. Then play a game of Laser Tag in the Combat Zone.

Get Creative

While most exhibits are for school-aged kids up to adults, you’ll find gears, a gigantic Lite-Brite, and fun stations for the preschool set in the Imagination Lab. And don’t forget to check out the Bubble Lab! Blowing bubbles through a bubble sheet, or making a bubble big enough to fit inside is fun for all ages!

Fly Higher

See how you’d look in a life-size replica of an EVA suit, and find out why astronauts wear them when working outside their spacecraft. Climb into a replica Mercury Capsule and experience what it feels like to lay inside this one-man space vehicle. Use the rover to examine the surface of Mars, try to land the Space Shuttle Discovery, or soar across the sky in a F18 fighter jet. Then take a turn on the Wonder Coaster, a 360-degree pitch and roll motion virtual ride the lets you design your own roller coaster and take a ride on your creation.

Everyone knows the Myrtle Beach area has some of the best live entertainment around. The Alabama Theatre, Palace Theatre, Pirates Voyage, Legends in Concert, and The Carolina Opry all call the Grand Strand their home. But there is more to discover if you dig a little deeper. The Myrtle Beach area has a thriving theatre scene with musicals and drama that continues to delight audiences each year. This season will bring some well know and loved shows like Oklahoma, Evita, Hello Dolly, Twelve Angry Men, and On The Razzle, plus innovative contemporary works like Two Rooms, Big Love, and Really Really. Check out these four amazing places to catch a fantastic live show and enjoy the cultural side of the Myrtle Beach area during your stay.

CCU Department of Theater

Coastal Carolina University made headlines this year when the Chanticleers won the College World Series. But did you know the University is also home to the most comprehensive undergraduate theatre program in South Carolina? CCU Department of Theatre trains exceptionally talented students in Theatre Performance, Musical Theater, and Design and Technical Theater. They offer a varied season to the public, including at least six productions, a dance concert, and a variety of other top-notch performances.

The upcoming 2016-2017 season starts with the acclaimed off-Broadway hit Really, Really, and concludes with Oklahoma, one of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most beloved musicals. Other performances include On The Razzle, Three Sisters, And The World Goes Round, and Big Love. Atlantic Stage currently occupies a temporary location inside Myrtle Beach Mall between Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Bodyworks, with a new, permanent location under construction on the other side of Bath and Bodyworks.  This interim space seats approximately 70 guests in a flexible, black box configuration. Seating arrangements vary from show to show in order to meet the demands of each production.

Atlantic Stage was formed in 2008 by a group of theatre artists working at Coastal Carolina University and regionally, and has an ensemble of professional resident artists who provide enlightening, entertaining productions that range from classical to contemporary. The 2016-2017 season will feature six shows, including Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, K2, ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas, and the world premiere of A Thing With Feathers, amongst others. Both individual tickets and season subscription packages are available.

Theatre of the Republic

Theatre of the Republic has been a part of the Myrtle Beach area theatre scene for the past 47 years. Located in historic Downtown Conway, they offer a traditional musical season and the new TORS’s Actors Playhouse with a non-musical season. It is considered one of the best community theatres in the region, with shows performed by local talent.

The 2016-2017 season includes five musicals, including Hello Dolly, Ghost, Pricilla Queen of the Desert, and Evita. Non-musicals include Ripcord, Twelve Angry Men, and three more selections. Ticket information and the complete schedule of dates can be found on their website. Theatre of the Republic also features the Coastal Youth Theatre.

Myrtle Beach Travel

You finally made it to your destination, checked into your rental property, and are ready to head out for some fun in the sun! The best part about digital photography is that you can take an unlimited amount of photographs during your stay in the Myrtle Beach area. Here are a few tips to help you capture your vacation memories, and make them last long after you return home.

  1. Admire The View

When traveling, don’t just take in the sights and breathtaking views, but also capture them on camera! If you are willing to step it up from amateur to professional, search for a good wide angle lens of about 10-22mm to help capture those wider landscape photos. A 35mm prime lens would be a good alternative for a more affordable price. Rather than use your expensive zoom lens, the wide angle will allow you to include as much of the surrounding landscape in your photo as possible. Not able to bring a wide-angle lens? Try some panoramic sequences on your digital camera or smartphone that you can piece together later in the editing program of your choice.

  1. Capture Unforgettable Faces

While it’s easy to get sidetracked capturing new locations with your wide-angle lens, don’t forget to capture special moments of the people that traveled with you! In order to pull this off, use a lens that can get fairly close. Make sure your aperture is wide open, which will give you a nice blurry background that highlights the faces even more. Make sure to focus on the eyes with wide apertures — the most important part of the photograph. A 50mm f/1.4 is the best lens for these types of shots. Not only are they highly affordable, but they will also make it seem effortless to produce quality images.

  1. Look For Small Details

Sometimes the smallest moments are the best parts of your trip — think footprints in the sand, the way the sunset shines on wild grass, or a particularly beautiful seashell you happen to come across at the beach. Choosing to highlight the little things helps you to remember the more reflective parts of your vacation.

  1. Wildlife Is All Around

One of the coolest parts about traveling somewhere new is the new wildlife you’ll encounter. Perhaps a little lizard will walk your path, or a small bird you’ve never seen before will emerge from behind a bush. Your friends back home will be quite impressed with the friendly and furry faces you came across during your journey! Shoot for a 200-300mm lens to grab the perfect photo in motion.

  1. Think Outside The Box

As a photographer you should consider yourself an artist looking for the special unforgettable moments worth capturing. While the person next to you may be taking the 10,000th photograph of that mechanical dinosaur ride, you may choose to walk off the beaten path a bit and capture a photo of an egret at rest along the waterway, or the look on your child’s face when he sees the boardwalk lit up at night.

From old-time favorite games like the Frisbee and Bocce to something original and new like Cornhole, there are plenty of great game options for today’s beach-goer. Sure, you could spend the day relaxing on the sand and surf during your stay in the Myrtle Beach area, but why not have some good clean family fun with the best games to play on the beach?

Catch

The Frisbee has been around for hundreds of years and it still delights both young and old. Of course you will need is a buddy (or man’s best friend) to play. Then watch closely as that famous plastic disk soars through the air and see who can catch the most tosses! If you don’t have a Frisbee, a football will do. And here’s a fun twist…. Find a lightweight, waterproof football made especially for the beach, toss it the ocean and let the little ones scramble to catch it as it rides the waves back onto shore.

Bocce

Another oldie but goodie, this game starts with eight balls in two different colors (usually made of hard plastic resin), and a small white ball called a pallino. Find a nice flat area of sand to play. Divide into two teams, pick a color, and toss the pallino underhand to see where it lands. This is the target. Teams alternate tossing the balls, trying to get closest to the pallino. Balls in the way may be knocked closer to or further from the pallino by their opponents’ or teammates’ balls. After all the balls have been played, the team with the ball closest to the pallino wins!

Cornhole

Cornhole has become one of the most popular beach pastimes in recent years. A cornhole set consists of two smooth wooden boards with a hole, and eight beanbags (four in one color and four in another). Two players or four players can play the game. For singles, both players begin at the same side, while players split into teams with one partner at each end of the playing area for doubles. See who can get the most points by sinking the beanbags into the cornhole!

More Beach Fun and Games

  • Kites
  • Sandcastles
  • Paddleball
  • Ladderball
  • Spikeball
  • Water Relay
  • Tic-Tac-Toe
  • Beach Volleyball

So, what’s your favorite game to play on the beach?

But did you know the Myrtle Beach area also has a variety of waterparks, perfect for both the young and young at heart? Whether you crave the thrills of the high and fast slides, or the slow drift down a lazy river, our waterparks have something to suit everybody!

Myrtle Waves

Need a break from the salt and sand? Spend a day at Myrtle Waves, the largest water park in South Carolina! Relax on the Lazy River, shoot down the Riptide Rockets, or ride the surf in the Ocean in Motion Wave Pool. You can even catch some rays on one of the hundreds of free lounge chairs while you watch the little ones splash around at Bubble Bay, a play area with safe depths of only 6-18 inches, and the Saturation Station. Older kids will enjoy the deep vertical drops of the Rockin’ Ray, or the more mellow curves of Snake Mountain. The thrill seekers in your family will not want to miss the Riptide Rockets and Tsunami. When you’ve had your fill of water slides drift along the Racin’ River or enjoy a swim in the wave pool. No need to worry about safety! You can relax and let the kids have fun with award-winning lifeguards on duty.

Splashes Oceanfront Water Park

Enjoy Myrtle Beach’s only oceanfront water park, Splashes, located adjacent to Family Kingdom Amusement Park on Ocean Boulevard. Older kids can enjoy the thrill of the slides and water flumes, while younger children can enjoy the splash pools with two refreshing rain trees, and eight kiddie area slides. The daredevils in your crew will love the Splashes Speed Slides. With over a 100-foot drop, these wet and wild slides are bound to get the adrenalin pumping! Visitors can pay per ride or purchase a Family Kingdom Water Park All Day Unlimited Ride Wristband.

Wild Water and Wheels

With over 33 exciting rides, Wild Water and Wheels is a 16-acre waterpark in nearby Surfside Beach that includes thrills for kids and adults of all ages. Enjoy faster slides such as the Side Winder, Triple Dip, and Serpentine, wipe out in the Wipe Out Wave Pool, or float gently along the Lazy River. If you’re brave, check out the Dark Hole, which features an enclosed trip through twisty tunnels! Other fun activities include go-carts, mini golf and bumper boats.
