Myrtle Beach SkylineWhether you are looking for a fun place to stroll, shop, or dine — or are simply in the mood for a GREAT view of the beach — The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade is the destination to visit! Experience a hub of activity with live entertainment every summer evening, including bagpipers, stilt walkers and jugglers, as well as weekly fireworks shows. The boardwalk offers family favorite events all summer long, including Ocean Boulevard’s Hot Summer Nights located at Plyler Park in the heart of the downtown area.

Recently voted #3 on National Geographic’s top 10 U.S. boardwalks, the 1.2-mile boardwalk was first established in the summer of 2010. Stretching from the Second Avenue Pier to the 14th Avenue Pier, the boardwalk features three different sections of varying shapes and widths. The first section, the North Walkway, extending from the 14th Avenue North Pier to Plyler Park at the foot of Mr. Joe White Avenue, features a raised wooden deck, with natural dune landscaping and vegetation. The natural environment provides a serene and peaceful background, and a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The boardwalk itself took nine months and nearly $6.5 million to build. Constructed with nearly 800,000 feet of lumber, builders used around 300,000 nails, 555,000 screws and 10,000 bolts to complete this ambitious project!

If you are looking for fun in the sun, then the second section of the boardwalk is the place for you! Extending from Plyler Park to Eighth Avenue North, this area is plentiful when it comes to beachfront stores and shops, beach eats, rides, arcades, attractions, and more. You are certain to feel nostalgia in the air when you relive the sights and sounds of your childhood carnival days.

The third and final section, the South Promenade, continues from Eighth Avenue North to First Avenue North, just south of the Second Avenue Pier. Enjoy relaxing views of the beach, low-key recreational activities and more.

Those interested in learning a bit of history of the area and local marine life are in luck. Thirteen plaques (installed August 2013) run along the boardwalk, highlighting information on local history and nature. The plaques, running from the north corner of Plyler Park to the former Myrtle Beach Pavilion site, enhance the downtown experience.

Each plaque has a QR code that visitors can scan with their smart phone and be directed to the DRC’s website for more information. Some of the information the plaques provide include information on loggerhead turtles, bottlenose dolphins, or major local historic events such as hurricanes Hazel and Hugo.

Created by the Myrtle Beach City Council, the DRC facilitates the revitalization of downtown Myrtle Beach, and the hard work has paid off. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway to the pier or an outing with the family, the Myrtle Beach area offers it all. Come visit the beauty and excitement of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk — we hope to see you soon!
