Halloween is the perfect time for ghost stories! There are many spooky legends and ghost tours along the Grand Strand, but here are a few of our favorite local tales! Read on if you dare….

Alice Flagg

The Ghost of Alice Flagg is said to haunt Murrells Inlet, just a few miles south of Myrtle Beach. Alice came from a wealthy family. She lived at The Hermitage with her mother, and her brother, Dr. Allard Flagg, in the early 1800s. Alice was in love with a man considered beneath her station, and her family did not approve of their engagement. They sent her away to a boarding school in Charleston, and tossed the engagement ring into the inlet. Soon after, she became ill and died with a broken heart. Alice Flagg was buried at the All Saints Episcopal churchyard near Pawley’s Island, where a plain marble slab, engraved ALICE, was placed over her burial mound. Visitors insist she haunts the inlet, her gravesite and her family home searching for her lost ring. Locals believe that if a young girl walks around the grave nine times her ring will disappear from her ring finger.

The legend is so popular it inspired a movie currently in production. Part love story, part thriller, The Ghost of Alice Flagg is set to release in 2016, and is one of three movies currently being filmed in the area.

 The Gray Man

In another tragic love story that took place in the early 1800s, the Gray Man was a sailor returning home to propose to his true love on Pawley’s Island. On the way, he was killed in an accident as he raced on horseback to reunite with his sweetheart. When she learned of his death, she went mad with grief, and spent hours walking along the strand in search of her beloved. One night, she had a dream that she was in a boat during a terrible storm, while her fiancé stood on the shore waving her towards him. In fear for her sanity, her family took her away to a doctor in Charleston. Within hours of their departure a hurricane hit Pawley’s Island. Realizing her love returned to save her life, she was finally at peace with his passing. To this day, people still claim they see the Gray Man walking the island before an oncoming storm.

Drunken Jack

In a region rich with history and pirate lore, dead men do tell tales! Drunken Jack, as he is commonly known, was a pirate who was stranded by his crew on an island in Murrells Inlet with only a case of rum to keep him alive. But man cannot live on rum alone, and soon poor Jack died alone, drunk and happy. Visitors to the inlet say they have seen Jack roaming the beaches of the Myrtle Beach area in search of rum to sustain his thirst.

Happy Halloween!
