When you think of the Myrtle Beach area, amazing attractions, delicious fresh seafood, and miles of sandy beaches probably come to mind. But did you know the Grand Strand is also rich in history, and a bounty of local farms that offer seasonal fruits, vegetables, and maybe even a glimpse of the past? Learn more about these six farms before your next vacation in the Myrtle Beach area.

Thompson Farm

Established in 1845 by the Thompson family, Thompson Farm and Nursery is a must-see southern gem that is still run by fourth and fifth generation Thompsons. This working farm is open Monday through Friday by appointment only. While you are there, be sure to stop in the oldest General Store in Horry County. Thompson Farm is located just outside of Conway, just minutes from Myrtle Beach.

Indigo Farms

Indigo Farms grows a variety of fruits and vegetables, available for purchase at their Farm Market. The grounds also feature a garden center, bakery, and an assortment of farm animals. Pick your own strawberries in the spring, and then come back for blueberries and blackberries in the summer. Indigo Farms is located in Calabash, just north of the Myrtle Beach area.

Copacetic Farm

Copacetic Farm is a small family owned and operated dairy farm in Little River, close to North Myrtle Beach. They are committed to providing natural dairy products without the use of hormones or antibiotics. Visit the farm to try their fresh, Grade A goat’s milk.

Tyler’s Produce

Visit Tyler’s Produce to pick your own strawberries this spring. This small, certified SC grown farm also offers fresh greens, tomatoes, and boiled peanuts, and is located in Conway, close to Myrtle Beach.

Freewoods Farm

Freewoods Farm is a 40-acre living farm museum that replicates life on small southern family farms owned and/or operated by African Americans between 1865-1900. Only authentic farm methods of the period are used. Mules and plows help to cultivate the land, and food is cooked with wood. Workers make syrup and soap, and harvest crops by hand. The farm consists of tilled fields, grazing land, and farm buildings of the period, such as the main farmhouse, a smokehouse, a tool shed, and livestock, tobacco and storage barns. Freewoods Farm is located in the Burgess community of Myrtle Beach, and is the only African-American historical living farm museum in the United States.

L.W. Paul Living History Farm

Experience life on a “one horse farm” at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm in Conway. This 17-acre working farm is free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, and teaches the history of the Horry County family farm from 1900-1955. Observe activities that would have been common on traditional family farms during this era during your visit. Plowing with mules, making lye soap, grinding grits, blacksmithing, curing meat, preserving vegetables, milking cows, cooking on a wood burning stove, and harvesting crops are only a few of the demonstrations to see at the Farm.
